Two Worlds Apart - Digital Exhibit
two worlds apart' is an ongoing visual experience of Houston that combines photography and videography to explore relatable struggles through fantastic imagery. Young adult subjects interact with the environment through the internal turmoil of not being accepted by society and how they cope with these feelings. Each of these series explore the thought of decisions and journeys and a person’s return to the earth while the world continues. One past series explores young people and mental health and how they cope with traumas. In this piece, I drew from my experiences and manifested them in over-dramatized versions that use heavy symbolism and cinematic language, collaborating with models and other photographers to create final images. This grant will fund two additions to this series. The first is titled “outside looking in” which will be a short clip of a young woman of latina and caucasian descent dressed as a payasa walking through the streets of Houston. The series will explore cultural divides through imagery from predominantly Mexican neighborhoods where vibrant cultures clash with gentrification and classism. The model will interact with the community as a clown, culminating with her sitting in front of two people speaking in English and Spanish until their words garble. The other set is “Relinquish,” a series of images and video where a black or brown woman wearing sheer clothing is in a forest, lying on an old cot with an assortment of decor where she'll appear to have been taking substances and interacting with faceless lovers. The photos will show her slowly degrading into sand until she is nothing but clothes. The images explore the theme of introspection, how one will, ultimately, return to the earth. These series will be displayed online to develop an in-person exhibition, combining film and photography that create new art experiences.
